EOC Hospital Group Ticino, a Swiss hospital management organisation based in the canton of Ticino, has invested in Ikegami MKC-210HD medical-grade camera systems for use at hospitals in Bellinzona, Locarno, Lugano, Lugano Italiano and Mendrisio. Eighteen of the cameras have been delivered by Ikegami's Swiss distributor partner, Mikroskop Technik Diethelm, together with microscopes for use in the hospitals' gynaecology departments.

The new cameras will be deployed in colposcope applications, allowing medical staff to make detailed examinations in high definition video. Video systems are being used increasingly as gynaecological tools. This Ikegami installation is one of the biggest of its kind Europe in recent years.

Designed and fully optimised for medical deployment, each MKC-210HD system comprises an ultra compact camera head which can be attached directly to compatible microscopes. The head itself measures just 31 x 31 x 36 millimetres width x height x depth and incorporates a 1/3 inch 2.2 megapixel Full HD CMOS imaging chip. It combines high resolution (900 TV lines horizontal) with high optical sensitivity (F7 at 2,000 lux, 3200K colour temperature) and high signal-to-noise ratio (50 dB). Video signal processing conforms to the high level of quality and reliability Ikegami achieves in its broadcast-grade cameras. The MKC-210HD camera head incorporates a C-Mount interface and delivers 1920 x 1080 pixel progressive-scan video at 50 or 59.94 (switchable) frames per second.

Operating features include the ability to capture and freeze the current image for detailed inspection of situations where motion could hide detail. Electronic zoom allows the centre of live or stored video images can be magnified up to fourfold. Scene files can be stored to internal memory or exported to the optional MDR-600HD Full-HD video recorder.

Automatic iris control allows the camera to be used with a shadowless lamp system. An automatic rolling electronic shutter (1/60 to 1/4000 second) can be activated to maintain optimal performance quality across various situations. All MKC-210HD production tools can be controlled from the camera control unit's front panel, together with horizontal and/or vertical flip. Additional features include automatic white balance and automatic video gain control (0 to 18 dB).

The MKC-210HD and its control unit can be employed across a temperature range of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. Power consumption is 16 watts or less. A single 5 metre or 10 metre cable connects the camera to a dedicated 170 x 60 x 200 mm camera control unit which can be powered from a 12 volt DC battery or the supplied AC mains adapter.  All relevant controls are accessible on the front panel. Two optional accessories are available for the system: a digital video interface board and dual-switch foot pedal
